Chika Ayozie Christopher Burke Jackie M. David Jason Harrison Jerry Gause Jonathon Rodgers Kenneth Street Merritt Britton Ryan Paine For the past several weeks, these adults have freely and willingly been among us as Inquirers of the Catholic faith, with weekly instruction of what we believe. Today, they have embraced the cross, and accepted the Sacred Scriptures; today, they became known to us as catechumens and candidates. From this day on, until they complete their preparation and are called to the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, we will walk with them, sharing our liturgy of the word, our Tradition, our works of charity and justice, and our life in community. Today the Church asks us to care for them as a mother cares for her children. 3 My Beloved Brothers and Sisters, Today we begin the month of November, the Month of All Souls, when we pause and reflect on eternal life and honor our beloved family members and friends who are now among the Faithful Departed. We pray more fervently during this month: "Eternal rest grant to them oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace, Amen." Since the Liturgy (The Mass) is considered the foretaste of Heaven) perhaps it is fitting that we are concentrating on a deeper understanding of the Liturgy during these weeks. I hope the inserts of the last two weeks have helped to shed some light o the great prayer that the Church gives us. The Liturgy is really about God and the time and effort we give to Him during the Liturgy. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI really captured this truth when he said "The Liturgy if about God; not about us." It is very important that we adore something/someone greater than ourselves. If we do not do this, then eventually we will start to adore our selves. This was the sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Our hearts must be focused on God. The great theologian Pierre Teilhard de Chardin said as much when he wrote that "we reach moral maturity on the day that we realize that we really only have one choice in life: Genuflect before something higher or begin to self-destruct." Simone Weil agreed: Despite being a fierce defendant of independence and private conscience, she makes it clear that the deepest need within the human soul is the need to be obedient to something beyond ourselves. Without this, she states, we inflate and grow silly, even to ourselves. The Liturgy/the Mass is the prayer of the whole assembly gathered for worship. We are joined to this divine action through Baptism, which incorporates us into the risen Christ. This action We are called to participate in this action which lies at "the center of the whole Christian life." In the celebration of the Mass the faithful form a holy people, a people of God's own possession and a royal priesthood, so that they may give thanks to God and offer the unblemished sacrificial victim not only by means of the hands of the priest but also together with him, so that they may learn to offer their very selves. this will be shown by their charity toward their brothers and sisters who participate with them in the same celebration. Have a blessed week, Msgr. Adam Daylight saving time Daylight saving time or summer time is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months so that people get up earlier in the morning and experience more daylight in the evening. Typically, users of DST adjust clocks forward one hour near the start of spring and adjust them backward in the autumn. Bible Study in English: The Sunday Bible study Luke 24 verses 1-35 discussion group gathers in the parish conference room on Sundays from 9:45 to 10:30 AM. At fifteen, he became a lay brother at the Dominican Friary at Lima and spent his whole life there-as a barber, farm laborer, almoner, and infirmarian among other things. Martin had a great desire to go off to some foreign mission and thus earn the palm of martyrdom. However, since this was not possible, he made a martyr out of his body, devoting himself to ceaseless and severe penances. In turn, God endowed him with many graces and wondrous gifts, such as, aerial flights and bilocation. St. Martin's love was all-embracing, shown equally to humans and to animals, including vermin, and he maintained a cats and dogs hospital at his sister's house. He also possessed spiritual wisdom, demonstrated in his solving his sister's marriage problems, raising a dowry for his niece inside of three day's time, and resolving theological problems for the learned of his Order and for bishops. A close friend of St. Rose of Lima, this saintly man died on November 3, 1639 and was canonized on May 6, His feast day is November 3. Patron of barbers. Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For those of Mexican heritage, November 2 means celebra on of el Dia de Los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. One of the most important days of the year for many, they join All Saints and All Souls together, visi ng the graves of babies and children on All Saints Day, since they are san tos (li le saints) or angelitos (li le angels). Flowers, their favorite toys, favorite music, and so on, are taken to them. The following day, people spend me some of them all day at the cemetery with their loved ones who have died. From the ancient customs of the Indians the families pray, talk with them, and take them their favorite food. It is a most solemn but joyful day. It is a day to celebrate Christ s victory over death: Death, where is your s ng? There is a mocking of death as people make skeletons, candy that represents death, and Pan de los Muertos (bread of the dead) and consume them in a kind of role reversal. One of the customs is to build an altarcito (li le altar) where one places mementos and pictures of those who have died. There are also favorite foods, candles, statues or pictures of favorite saints, books, and Bibles. some parishes have begun to build an altarcito where all parishioners can join in honoring the deceased. A remembrance book can be placed to write names in. The altarcito is tradi onally le up for the month of November. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
